Donald Trump campaigned on keeping America out of endless foreign conflicts. But as the war between Israel and Iran escalates, the president finds himself in a geopolitical bind that could override his “America First” doctrine.

Former Vice President Mike Pence said on “State of the Union” Sunday that if Israel’s attack doesn’t somehow convince Iran to make major concessions in Trump’s diplomatic attempt to end its nuclear program, then the United States should be prepared to join the conflict.

The U.S. has unique power to force restraint, but with the offensive on its third day and the death toll rising, there is little sign Trump will wield his leverage.
