Florida lawmakers and DeSantis could have a way to update state laws to change references from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. The Legislature regularly passes what are known as "reviser's bills" that do such things as change terms in laws.

On President Donald Trump's Inauguration Day, Governor Ron DeSantis made Florida the first state to reference the "Gulf of America" in an executive order when he issued a state of emergency due to cold weather.

Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida referred to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” in a state executive order on Monday, even before President Trump had taken any presidential action to rename the body of water.
