Now that Judge Amit Mehta has found Google is a monopolist, lawyers for the Department of Justice have begun proposing solutions to correct the company’s illegal behavior and restore competition to the market for search engines.

The US Justice Department told a federal judge it is considering recommending that Google be forced to sell off parts of its operations to alleviate the harm caused by its monopolization of the online search market,

Several high-stakes cases, including two involving Google, could determine whether that dormant period comes to an end.The Justice Department submitted a filing Tuesday that presented a federal court with a range of potential options—from conduct restrictions to a breakup—aimed at ending what a judge said was Google’s unlawful monopoly in search.

They include making Google’s data available to rivals and forcing it to break off parts of the company, the Justice Department said in a court filing.

Google’s breakup is among the remedies the U.S. Justice Department is considering recommending as a penalty for its monopolistic practices.
