Schools, colleges and government offices have shut in parts of southern India as heavy monsoon rains triggered severe flooding

India’s Meteorological Department warned of “heavy to very heavy” rainfall expected in parts of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala. Heavy rain and strong winds have battered southern India since Oct 15, forcing many schools shut and disrupting train services.

The IMD said India did not experience any 'break monsoon' conditions this year because of the large number of low-pressure systems.

The IMD said that while the Southwest Monsoon is likely to withdraw from remaining parts of the country during subsequent two days, Northeast Monsoon rainfall activity is like to commence over south eastern peninsular region during the same period with the setting in of easterly and northeasterly winds over southern peninsular India,

The India Meteorological Department issued heavy rainfall warning in in 10 states from October 12 till 16. A yellow alert, for heavy downpours on October 12, has been issued in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh and Gujarat.
