In the first assembly elections following the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP secured 29 seats, improving its tally from 25 seats in the 2014 elections.

Opposition parties seeking the restoration of autonomy in volatile Indian-administered Kashmir have edged out the party of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the first regional election since New Delhi imposed direct rule five years ago.

The BJP is in the lead in the state of Haryana which borders the capital Delhi, but trails in the federal territories of Jammu and Kashmir, which are seeing their first election results in a decade.

A surprise election win in Haryana state has given Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a much-needed boost, in spite of a loss in the election in Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP scripted a victory in Haryana, trumping widely held expectations that it will struggle to go past the majority mark while J&K gave a clear mandate to the familiar combination of NC and Congress in its first election post the abrogation of Article 370.

This was also the first assembly election to be held since the federal government revoked the region's autonomy and changed the former state into a federally governed territory of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. Votes are also being counted in the northern state of Haryana.

By fielding Shagun Parihar, the BJP aimed to appeal to both the majority Muslim and minority Hindu communities in a district that experienced terrorism.
