A baby spider monkey discovered by the California Highway Patrol this week is in critical condition, but the Oakland Zoo hopes she will make a full recovery.

A baby spider monkey that was seized during a traffic stop along a Central California highway earlier this week is now in the care of the Oakland Zoo. California Highway Patrol said the animal was discovered after Madera-area officers pulled over a Rolls Royce on northbound Highway 99.

A baby monkey was rescued by CHP officers earlier this week from a suspected DUI driver in the Central Valley. Primates are illegal to own as pets in California. The tiny monkey is currently living at the Oakland Zoo and receiving vital veterinary care.
