The writing is almost literally on the wall for Chrome’s most popular ad blockers. After months of warnings that extensions like uBlock Origin would be removed after Chrome’s Manifest V3 extension update, Google is now telling Chrome users who try to download it from the Chrome Web Store that it “may soon no longer be supported.”

Google Chrome has begun to phase out uBlock Origin. The developer of the free ad blocker, Raymond Hill, recently reposted a screenshot that shows Chrome automatically turning off uBlock Origin because it is “no longer supported.

Earlier this year Google confirmed it would start phasing out extension support for the Manifest V2 framework. That’s very bad news for uBlock Origin, one of the best ad blockers, because it means the app would end up being disabled in the Chrome browser.

Google's Manifest V3 is phasing out uBlock Origin due to limitations on content blocking. uBlock Origin Lite is not a sufficient replacement and lacks granular controls, and doesn't work against anti-ad-blocking measures.

Manifest V3 is the new extensions framework for Google's Chrome browser, and one notable outcome is that ad blockers can't block so many ads. After years of delay, Google is reportedly "purging" such extensions and accelerating the framework's rollout.
