Even as Chennai continues to batter heavy rainfall for the past few days, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has lowered the Red alert for Chennai and adjoining districts to an orange alert on October 17.

The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert in seven Tamil Nadu districts including Chennai, Vellore and Ranipet.

Chennai has been struggling with heavy rains, causing waterlogging and traffic problems. The IMD has predicted heavy rains in the region, while the state government is taking preventive measures. Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected flood-prone areas and advised fishermen and IT professionals.

Since Monday night, Chennai and its suburbs, including those in the nearby Tiruvallur district, have been experiencing intermittent rains.

Southern Railway announced cancellation of four express trains, including the Chennai Central-Mysuru Kaveri Express, due to waterlogging. Several domestic flights were also cancelled.

The India Meteorological Department said Tamil Nadu is likely to receive “isolated extremely heavy rainfall” for the next 24 hours, while warnings for “very heavy rainfall” were issued for October 17

Chennai: Eight flights have been cancelled amid torrential rainfall and adverse weather conditions in Chennai, according to an official statement. Indigo Airlines also issued a travel advisory, requesting passengers to closely monitor their flight status as heavy rains in Chennai and surrounding areas have disrupted flight schedules,

Several parts of Tamil Nadu have been experiencing heavy rain for the last two days. Inclement weather conditions are expected to continue in Chennai for the next four days. Several flights in Chennai have been cancelled as the city continues to witness heavy rain.

The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal between October 12-16, with the most intense downpours likely on October 14-15
