The San Diego Padres and New York Mets have reportedly discussed a trade involving starting pitcher Dylan Cease. According to Jon Heyman of the New York

The Cubs are among the teams that have discussed right-hander Dylan Cease with the Padres, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network. There’s no indication that the two sides are close to any sort of deal or that discussions were anything more than exploratory.

The San Diego Padres had, by all accounts, a successful 2024 season, as they came to within one win away of advancing to the NLCS and eliminating the Los Angeles Dodgers from World Series contention.

The Cubs also are involved. But while their prospect list is ranked higher, with highly regarded 3B prospect Matt Shaw understandably off limits in rental deals, the Padres may prefer the Mets’ list, including Brandon Sproat, Jett Williams and Luisangel Acuña.
