Gift Nifty was trading around 23,755 level, a discount of nearly 40 points from the Nifty futures’ previous close, indicating a weak start for the Indian stock market indices.

India's domestic benchmark indices closed flat on Wednesday amid muted global cues, as selling was seen in auto, PSU Bank, financial service, pharma, metal and realty sectors.

Most sectoral indices ended the session in the green, indicating broad-based buying across sectors. However, some pockets of weakness were seen in IT and metal stocks, with the IT index declining by 0.6% and Nifty Metal falling by 0.68% during the session.

On January 7, the Indian stock market benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty 50, gained even as HMPV virus fears persist.
