According to an analysis by KUT, these companies own and manage at least 52,715 rental homes in the Austin metro. That accounts for roughly 13% of all multifamily homes.

Six of the largest rental companies in the country are accused of using a pricing scheme that is harmful to renters.

Camden Property Trust (NYSE:CPT) disagrees with the allegations made in the amended complaint against RealPage, which added Camden and others as defendants. Camden will vigorously defend itself against these claims and intends to move for dismissal.

After suing real estate software company RealPage in late August, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) expanded its lawsuit on Wednesday to include six major landlords. According to the DOJ, the landlords worked with RealPage to keep rent prices high by sharing sensitive information.

The Department of Justice alleges several property management companies colluded to inflate rents using algorithmic software, harming millions of renters in Houston and across the country.

The amended complaint alleges RealPage coordinated with big landlord companies in an unlawful scheme to decrease competition among landlords and force tenants to pay higher rents for apartment housing.

The 161-page complaint alleges that the landlords used nonpublic information and RealPage’s products to charge higher rents than what market forces would have determined.

The allegations made against the six companies were filed Tuesday as an amended complaint in the ongoing antitrust lawsuit against RealPage. The DOJ originally filed the lawsuit against RealPage in August 2024,
