SAN DIEGO — Veteran outfielder Jason Heyward and the San Diego Padres finalized a $1 million, one-year contract on Tuesday. Heyward can earn $250,000 in performance bonuses: $50,000 each for 200, 250, 300, 350 and 400 plate appearances.
In October, the San Diego Padres were one win away from eliminating the eventual World Series champions and their arch nemesis, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The fan base was overflowing with excitement, fairly confident in the team’s ability to deliver the city its first title in franchise history.
The stoppage tinkered with the momentum and repositioned the mojo. Heyward, who had struggled in the series, decided to gift his team the time to think and regroup. As with much of their roster, the Padres’ left field situation is much clearer now than it was last month. Jason Heyward and Connor Joe are on board -- and both have reported to camp ahead of Monday’s first full-squad workout.
The 35-year-old spent last season with the Dodgers and Astros, batting .211 with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs in 87 games.
