Even as Chennai continues to batter heavy rainfall for the past few days, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has lowered the Red alert for Chennai and adjoining districts to an orange alert on October 17.

The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert in seven Tamil Nadu districts including Chennai, Vellore and Ranipet.

Chennai has been struggling with heavy rains, causing waterlogging and traffic problems. The IMD has predicted heavy rains in the region, while the state government is taking preventive measures. Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected flood-prone areas and advised fishermen and IT professionals.

Since Monday night, Chennai and its suburbs, including those in the nearby Tiruvallur district, have been experiencing intermittent rains.

Southern Railway announced cancellation of four express trains, including the Chennai Central-Mysuru Kaveri Express, due to waterlogging. Several domestic flights were also cancelled.

CHENNAI: Several long-distance trains were either cancelled or diverted due to waterlogging on railway tracks in Chennai on Tuesday. Four trains -- Sapthagiri (to Tirupati), Yercaud (to Erode), Kaveri (to Mysuru) and Tirupati Express -- scheduled to depart from Chennai Central on Tuesday evening and night have been cancelled.

PTI Heavy rains have been predicted for Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Several trains, and domestic flights were cancelled and bus serviceds were affected in the city as heavy rains lashed Chennai and other parts of the state on Tuesday.

The India Meteorological Department said Tamil Nadu is likely to receive “isolated extremely heavy rainfall” for the next 24 hours, while warnings for “very heavy rainfall” were issued for October 17
