The New England Patriots were expected to have a strong defensive front this season, but they suffered a big blow at the beginning of training camp when defensive lineman Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots.

FOXBOROUGH — With Christian Barmore and Ja’Whaun Bentley on the shelf and Jabrill Peppers facing an uncertain future, cornerback Christian Gonzalez has become the most important defensive player on the Patriots’ active roster.

Sunday’s 15-10 loss to the Dolphins again saw Gonzalez hold his own against one of the top wideouts in the game in Tyreek Hill. Gonzalez recorded an interception, posted two pass breakups, and limited Hill to two receptions for 34 yards off of five targets in the Patriots’ loss.
