A man fatally shot a Texas sheriff's deputy Wednesday at a shopping plaza in Houston and then evaded officers for hours before shooting a K-9 that helped find him hiding under trash in a dumpster, authorities said.

A manhunt ended in Texas when a Houston man accused of shooting and killing a deputy serving a warrant on him in the parking lot of a Dollar Tree, was fatally shot by police.

An officer was hospitalized and police were searching for one person after a shooting Thursday morning in southwest Houston, officials said. Officials with the Houston Police Department provided limited details about the shooting on Twitter, saying preliminary information was that someone had shot an officer from another agency and fled on foot.

The officer who died was identified as Jesus Vargas, a 17-year veteran of the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office. Police later killed the suspected shooter, 56-year-old Robert Davis III, after an hours-long manhunt.

The Houston County Sheriff’s Office announced on Sunday that they are holding an active manhunt for Cryer, with the assistance of DPS and CPD. The search is taking place near the county line on US Highway 287 North.

Brazoria County deputy Jesus Jesse Vargas was shot and killed in southwest Houston on Wednesday while attempting to serve a warrant to a suspect.
