Canada's new leader has announced a radar purchase from Australia and an expansion of military operations in the Arctic while visiting Canada’s far north in an effort to assert sovereignty over the increasingly contested region.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that Canada will invest $420 million into the military's infrastructure and presence in the Arctic, and $253 million into Nunavut infrastructure. Carney also announced a partnership with Australia to build an early warning radar system along the Canada-U.
