A loud sonic boom was reported across Norfolk as the fighter jets raced to intercept the airliner. BBC Radio Norfolk listeners reported hearing a load bang at approximately 12.40 BST. One of them, Chris, said via WhatsApp: "The sonic boom scared the you-know-what out of me in Weasenham! The ground definitely shook."

According to flight tracker Flightradar24, the Air Indian Express plane took off from the Madurai airport at about 1.54pm local time and was due to land in Singapore at about 8.50pm. It only landed at 10.04pm after a delay of over an hour.

The captain of the plane could be heard telling air traffic control that the aircraft had a "suspected bomb" on board.
