CLINTON, Iowa — In 2021, community leaders in Clinton came up with the idea of creating a life-size bronze memorial statue to honor legendary Hawkeye football player Duke Slater.
Duke Slater was Iowa football’s first Black All-American player and he started his career in Clinton. “Duke Slater had real connection with Clinton,” Rozendaal said.
Slater helped lead Clinton to two State Championships in 1913 and 1914. He went on to become a consensus All-American at Iowa, helping the Hawkeyes win a share of the National Championship in 1921.
