ROME (AP) — President Donald Trump will be among more than 50 heads of state and other dignitaries attending Saturday’s funeral for Pope Francis, where he’ll personally pay his respects to the Roman Catholic leader who pointedly disagreed with him on a variety of issues.

On the last day of public viewing ahead of Pope Francis's funeral, tens of thousands of people lined up to see him.

Roger Yu, a gay man from the Philippines who abandoned plans to become a priest, said he was in Italy to pay homage to Pope Francis, a spiritual leader he saw as an inspiring supporter of the LGBTQ community.

Francis did away with that sort of viewing. Instead, a procession brought his coffin on Wednesday directly to St. Peter’s Basilica, where a public viewing is taking place. Francis’ body, dressed in papal vestments, his head covered with a white bishop’s miter, is lying in state to allow tens of thousands of mourners to bid farewell.

Leaders and prominent figures from across the world will be in attendance when Pope Francis is buried in a service on April 26 in Vatican City.

Ten U.S. cardinals are among those who will gather in Rome to elect a successor to Pope Francis, who died Monday.
